Among the fans made in Kumamoto, Shibu Uchiwa has a unique texture and coloring. Shibu Uchiwa is made by coating the Japanese paper part of an Uchiwa with a persimmon stain to give it a unique luster. The persimmon stain not only strengthens the fan itself, but also prevents insects from damaging it. The longer the fan is used, the more the persimmon lacquer will change and develop a nice, deep color and luster. Since it comes in an original Japanese paper package, it would make a good gift.
